The Kasur
town is well known for its commercial and industrial activities
particularly for tanneries. In 1976, it was given the status of
District headquarters. Kasur is known since ages as a centre of
trade, commerce and culture. The population of Kasur according to
1998 census was 245321. The municipal boundary extends over an area
of about 2,335 acres, surrounded by agricultural land. Before
implementation of pollution control program, mainly to prevent and
control environmental pollution due to tanneries, large land areas
were under stagnant water. This waste water was generated by
tanneries and contained heavy metals used in processing of hides and
skins. It made the environment of the city heavily polluted. Even
the sub soil water has been affected as per water analysis reports.
The tannery effluent is now being treated before discharge into the
Rohi Nullah passing through the center of town.
